Tributes have been paid to professional racer and MythBusters presenter Jessi Combs, who has died in the US while trying to break the land-speed record in a jet-powered car.

Combs was killed in a crash in Oregon's Alvord Desert on Tuesday.

"Jessi's most notable dream was to become the fastest woman on Earth, a dream she had been chasing since 2012... one of the rare dreamers with the bravery to turn those possibilities into reality, and she left this Earth driving faster than any other woman in history," her family said in a statement.

Paying tribute on Instagram, Combs' teammate Terry Madden wrote: "I have never loved or been loved by anyone as much as this amazing woman @thejessicombs she was truly my unicorn and I enjoyed every single minute that I had with her.

"She was the most amazing spirit that I have ever or will ever know. Unfortunately we lost her yesterday in a horrific accident, I was the first one there and trust me we did everything humanly possible to save her!!"

Nicknamed "The Fastest Woman on Four Wheels", Combs set a new women's four-wheel land-speed record of 398mph with a top speed of 440mph in the Alvord Desert in October 2013. In September 2016 at the same location she set another record with a speed of almost 478mph. She had wanted to beat the 512mph women's land-speed record set in 1976 by American stunt driver and racer Kitty O'Neil in a three-wheeled rocket car.

Along with presenting on science entertainment series MythBusters, Combs' other screen credits included Overhaulin', Truck U, All Girls Garage and Jay Leno's Garage.
