2FM presenter Louise McSharry has welcomed her first child; a baby boy named Sam.

Taking to Twitter to share the happy news, McSharry said, "Happy to say we have our baby, he is the best thing ever and his name is Sam."

McSharry shared the news of her pregnancy on her blog in April saying she and husband Gordon Spierin were "absolutely delighted and a little bit terrified" about the prospect of becoming parents.

The 32-year-old radio presenter, who was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma in August 2014, has been very open about her cancer battle and undergoing chemotherapy, and charted her fertility struggles in RTÉ2's documentary, F**k Cancer, last year.

"I can honestly say that throughout my experience with cancer I only thought ‘WHY ME?’ one time," she wrote on her website. "That moment came in the office of a fertility specialist four months after being given the all clear.

"The treatment which had saved my life had also decimated my egg count. Where I should have been at 35 or 40 on the scale of being able to conceive, I was a two. I was a two, and I was pissed off."

"Then, a few months after we started trying, I got pregnant," she wrote. "We spent the seven weeks between finding out and going for a scan in total disbelief, barely telling anyone, and trying not to get our hopes up.

"This wasn’t meant to have happened! Then, last week, we saw our baby wriggling around on a screen in The Rotunda, and now there is simply no denying it. No matter what happens now there is a baby of our creation, and I have become the exception."

The straight talking presenter also won widespread praise for her memoir Fat Chance, My Life in Ups and Downs and Crisp Sandwiches which was published earlier this summer.

The canddid book covered a huge range of topics from her troubled childhood living in Chicago with her alcoholic mother, her battle with Hodgkin's Lymphoma and her wedding to husband Gordon last year.
