Niall Horan has been named as an ambassador for the 2016 Ryder Cup golf tournament.

The One Direction singer is a keen golfer and he has been focusing on the sport since the boyband began their extended hiatus.

Ryder Cup captain for Team Europe, Darren Clarke, announced the news of Horan's new gig on Twitter and posted a photo of the Mullingar native with the Ryder Cup, with the caption, "Delighted to welcome my friend @NiallOfficial to Team Europe as one of our ambassadors for the 2016 Ryder Cup." The competition takes place from September 30 to October 2 at the Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota.

Horan then took to Twitter, thanking Clarke and sharing a message for the team, saying, "Good luck lads. We're all behind you. I really can't wait to be there to roar you on. C'mon Europe!"

Horan recently joined his close friend and pro golfer Rory McIlroy at the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open in The K Club, Co. Kildare.

The star also hit headlines recently after he called for more women and young people to take up the sport as they are "the future of the game".

"I would really like to see a lot more girls playing it because the girls' tour at the moment, the LPGA tour, is absolutely amazing, and there should be more kids playing," he said.

Horan said he was "probably over the hill now" to follow his dream of being a professional golfer, but hinted at another career now his former band is on hiatus, "If I could teach I would, but not at the moment."
