Jimmy O'Brien describes the battle to take the village of Beaumont Hamel which was little more than a pile of bricks. When they went over the top they were followed by a line of tanks. Theses huge cumbersome tanks often ran over the bodies of the dead or injured men who had fallen.
Jimmy O'Brien went into action with a thousand comrades in a battle that lasted for three days seven hundred of those comrades were killed.

'The Irish Brigades In The First World War' was a two part documentary for radio. The programme examined the participation of the Irish Brigades in the Great War using personal accounts of the battles from surviving members.
The documentary was produced by Kieran Sheedy and presented by Tom McGurk. The clip used here was taken from part two and broadcast on 8 December 1974.
