Today is UNESCO World Poetry Day. UNESCO World Poetry Day began in 1999 with the objective of promoting the reading, writing, publishing and teaching of poetry throughout the world.

In celebration of this day RTÉ Archives take a look back to a programme from 1976 profiling the work of Nobel Prize laureate Seamus Heaney.

In this clip from the programme Seamus Heaney reads his poem 'Bogland' from the collection 'Door Into the Dark' and then explains his “curious and sustained interest in bogs” as Aindreas O Gallchoir puts it. Heaney describes the bog as "a feminine, goddess ridden ground".

Broadcast as part of the ‘Writer in Profile’ series in 1976, the programme is presented by Aindreas O Gallchoir. This programme was broadcast on 23 August 1976.
