    Dan Hegarty - The Alternative

The Alternative To Sleep! Alt Rock, Metal, Hip-Hop, Reggae, Electro, plus the RTE 2fm studio sessions, & live music from across Europe.

For many fans, musicians and critics alike the guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Michael Rother is a key figure of the innovative and singularly influential music scene originating from Germany in the early 1970s. His music has been inspirational for generations of musicians – from David Bowie, Brian Eno, Iggy Pop, DEVO, Sonic Youth, Stereolab, U2, Autechre, Radiohead, Primal Scream, and beyond.

Michael Rother was a member of Kraftwerk in 1971 and formed the legendary bands NEU! (with Klaus Dinger) and Harmonia (with Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Dieter Moebius of Cluster) before releasing nine acclaimed solo albums.

Michael Rother performs his first concert in Ireland at The Village (Dublin) on Monday, April 29. He will play the endless fast-forward type of music of NEU!, as well as selected tracks by Harmonia and from Rother’s solo works.

Solar Bears are back with their second album ‘Supermigration’, the long awaited follow-up to 2010's ‘She Was Coloured In’. If you were into the debut, ‘Supermigration’ will put a semi-permanent smile on your face! To launch the album, they make a rare live appearance at The Button Factory on Friday, April 26 with a full live band.

Phoenix have been building their following over the past few years, converting the masses to their kind of alt-pop. ‘Bankrupt!’ doesn’t stray too far from what they’ve been bring us to-date. They’ll be one of the acts that visit Ireland for the Longitude festival in July.

Australian outfit Underground Lovers have a new album called ‘Weekend’. If you’re familiar with their (rather excellent) back catalogue, you’ll love this. If you’re not, then prepare yourself to be impressed... Think New Order meets My Bloody Valentine meets Curve, and you’ll have an idea of where Underground Lovers are coming from.

This week’s competition is as follows....

The Prize: Tickets to see British Sea Power at The Academy in Dublin on May 7th, Tickets to see Angel Olsen in The Half Moon Theatre (Cork, on May 3), ‘Mosquito’ by Yeah Yeah Yeahs, ‘Arts & Crafts 2003 - 2013’, K-X-P ‘II’, Gallows ‘Gallows’, and ‘Loveblood’ by King Charles.

The Question: Name the current album from Yeah Yeah Yeahs?
