McCarthy and Prendergast among five uncapped players for New Zealand tour

Ireland head coach Andy Farrell has named five uncapped players in his squad for the upcoming tour of New Zealand.

Leinster trio Joe McCarthy, Jimmy O'Brien and Ciarán Frawley have all been included, as has Munster loosehead Jeremy Loughman and Connacht flanker Cian Prendergast.

All five have been involved in Irish camps over the course of this season, and have been included among the 40-man group that will travel to New Zealand for a three-Test series, as well as two tour matches against the Maori All Blacks.

The group will be captained by Johnny Sexton, who is among five players who were involved in Ireland's last tour to New Zealand in 2012.

Robert Baloucoune, Andrew Conway, Chris Farrell and Rónan Kelleher have been ruled out of the tour through injury, while Munster's Jack O'Donoghue and Ulster's Stuart McCloskey are among the in-form players to have been left out.

Connacht senior coach Pete Wilkins has also been drafted in to work on Farrell's coaching team for the extended tour, which will be a first for Farrell since he took charge in 2020.

With Leinster hooker Kelleher injured, Connacht's Dave Heffernan joins Dan Sheehan and Rob Herring in the group, while six props have been included, with tightheads Tadhg Furlong, Tom O'Toole and Finlay Bealham, as well as looseheads Andrew Porter, Cian Healy and Loughman.

In the second row, Leinster's Ross Molony is the unlucky man to lose out, with the uncapped McCarthy (above) joining James Ryan, Iain Henderson, Tadhg Beirne and Kieran Treadwell.

Ryan Baird is included as one of eight back rows listed, along with Prendergast, Gavin Coombes, Nick Timoney, and regulars Peter O'Mahony, Josh van der Flier, Jack Conan and Caelan Doris.

There's no major surprise in the half-back selections with Jamison Gibson-Park, Conor Murray and Craig Casey, as well as Sexton and Joey Carbery, while Harry Byrne has held off competition from brother Ross, Ulster's Billy Burns and Munster's Ben Healy to take the third 10 spot.

In the centre, the versatile Frawley returns having trained with the squad in November, while Robbie Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Garry Ringrose and James Hume are selected as expected.

The remaining seven players are back-three options with Ulster's Mike Lowry included despite missing the URC play-offs due to a facial injury. With Baloucone and Conway unavailable, Jimmy O'Brien and the in-form Jordan Larmour return, as well as Mack Hansen, James Lowe, Hugo Keenan and veteran Keith Earls.
