Ulster are still assessing the health of their squad ahead of Saturday's United Rugby Championship match against Munster on Saturday (7.35pm).

Head coach Dan McFarland was asked for an update during Monday’s press conference but said the bulletin would come on Tuesday and was mostly "Covid-related".

The province’s URC ties against Leinster and Connacht were postponed over the Christmas period due to outbreaks in the Ulster camp.

In a statement to RTÉ Sport, Ulster said: "Given the situation is very fluid at the moment, we will provide an update regarding player availability with this week’s team announcement on Friday."

"We're just going to proceed as if the game is going ahead, that's what we'll do," the head coach said on Monday.

"It's safe to say we are in a better position than we were in last week. We're going to leave [the medical update] until [Tuesday] until we have a better handle on things. It will be mainly Covid-related."

On the subject of why and when a match gets cancelled, he said: "In my experience so far, it's when the situation is considered that going ahead with the game is likely to cause more spread, or has the potential to cause more spread.

"If you feel that you have the situation under control, that's the way it is.

"Obviously there are situations where you don't have enough players, we would have played on both weeks even with weakened teams, but that wasn't the situation."

Meanwhile, the match between Scarlets and Dragons on Saturday has been postponed due to Covid-19 issues.

The Welsh derby fixture was due to take place at Parc y Scarlets in Llanelli, but is now off after some positive coronavirus cases in the Dragons' squad.

"A number of positive Covid-19 cases within the Dragons playing squad have been reported by the region," the URC said in a statement.

"The URC Medical Advisory Group has liaised with the region, and having considered all the facts have deemed that the fixture cannot go ahead as scheduled.

"The United Rugby Championship will now consider available dates to reschedule the game."

The Dragons last played on 17 December, and have now seen three successive URC fixtures postponed.
