Róisín Ní Riain secured an impressive bronze in the 100m S13 butterfly at the World Para Swimming Championships in Madeira.
The Limerick native held off the challenge of Poland's Joanna Mendak to finish third in a time of 1.09.05 in Sunday's final.
Ní Riain, who finished eighth in the event at Tokyo 2020, was taking part in her first World Championships.
"I'm absolutely delighted, I wasn’t expecting it," she said.
"I was hoping (for a medal) but I wasn’t expecting it so I am absolutely thrilled."
Ní Riain had made a positive return to the pool in the morning as she finished fourth in her heat which was enough to see her secure a place in the final.
Ni Riain was the first Irish athlete to compete at the Games before the opening ceremony took place on Sunday evening. Amy Sheridan, who is making her Games debut, was the flag bearer, where she was joined by Ellen Keane, who won gold in the SB8 Breaststroke at last year's Tokyo Games.
Keane confirmed that she will not be involved in the Individual Medley event but will compete in the SB8 Breaststroke heats on Saturday.
