Chris Forrester and St Patrick's Athletic 'galvanised' by 'healthy distraction' of CSKA Sofia tie ahead of run-in

Are you allowed to have more than one best day of your life?

Chris Forrester definitely can. Bring up last season's FAI Cup final and the St Patrick's Athletic playmaker still beams with pride.

Back in the spring, his former team-mate Lee Desmond phrased his joy in similar terms but for Forrester, who scored a scintillating solo goal on the day, it was a second glory day in the domestic soccer calendar after helping to end the Saints' 53-year wait in 2014.

"The first time we won it, the club, we hadn't won it for so many years so it was amazing to do it for them," he told RTÉ Sport this week at the Aviva Stadium as EA Sports announced the return of the SSE Airtricity League Club Packs in FIFA 23.

"I felt like I was almost doing it for them. This time I was doing it for my family and my little girl was at the game and stuff like that. Lee Desmond is right, it was the best day of his life because it was unbelievable.

"It was the best day of mine too. Everything about the day was just so perfect - the atmosphere, the stadium, the set-up - everything was just perfect."

The glow of glory was somewhat dimmed afterwards when manager Stephen O'Donnell left for Dundalk - a situation that left Forrester "awfully upset" given that a rebuild would follow ahead of this season after a 2021 full of promise.

And unfortunately for Pat's, their cup title defence lasted one round this year with a defeat to Waterford at a time when they were being plagued by inconsistency.

That disappointment was followed by an immediate high and then a low. The first was a landmark away win at Bulgaria's CSKA Sofia in the Europa Conference League third qualifying round.

The second leg saw Tim Clancy's side edged out with some of the officiating leaving a lot to be desired from the Inchicore club's point of view.

But since then, Pat's form has been stratospheric. They have won five league games on the trot and suddenly from being in flux, they know a win in their game in hand over Dundalk will see them back in third place in the race for Europe.

Interestingly, it's the experience against CSKA which seems to have given the Saints a pep in their step.

"I think it brought us together as a team. In the CSKA game we were hard done by in that game I think," he said.

"A couple of decisions went against us and that kind of galvanised us and you're right, (Europe) can be a bit of a distraction but it was a healthy distraction for us because we weren't doing too well in the league.

"We were hit and miss and since we've come back from the European games, we've been right on it and the momentum has been on our side and we're feeling good."

Adding extra bricks to the rebuild this summer has also helped with Serge Atakayi, Harry Brockbank, Thijs Timmermans, goalkeeper Danny Rogers and Barry Cotter among those strengthening the spine of the side.

Forrester was speaking as EA Sports announced the return of the SSE Airtricity League Club Packs in FIFA 23, which will be launched worldwide on 30 September

A change of system has also been helpful with Forrester in his usual midfield berth in front of a back three instead of the four that started the season.

"The change in system has been working well for us. We look pretty solid, we're getting a few goals and it's tailored to everyone's strengths, so it's been really positive," he said.

Forrester won Ireland Under-21 caps back in 2013 and on a potentially historic few days for that age grade in their bid to reach the European Championships via the play-offs, St Pat's have had a number of players called up.

It's Joe Redmond, a rock at the back for the Saints, who has really impressed his older team-mate and symbolises the vein of form the club has found of late.

"Joe's unbelievable to be fair, you do forget that he's so young as well. He carries himself so well on the pitch. He's been made captain of the club as well which is a huge honour for him and I think he can do anything he wants to in the game. It's just whether he wants to put the work in and continue on the trajectory that he's on. He can do anything in the game really."

For Pat's, what they want is to get back into Europe again and a galvanised side has every chance of making that happen.
