Goalkeeper Darren Randolph has missed out on a place in Stephen Kenny's 25-man squad for the Republic of Ireland's upcoming World Cup 2022 qualifiers against Portugal, Azerbaijan and Serbia.

The 34-year-old from Bray had been Ireland's No 1 since replacing Shay Given to great effect in 2015 but a hip injury kept him out of Ireland's losses against Serbia and Luxembourg last March, and Manchester City youngster Gavin Bazunu (on loan at Portsmouth) shone between the sticks in the latter despite the result.

Liverpool's Caoimhin Kelleher also impressed on his debut, a friendly draw with Hungary in June, and Mark Travers, who was in goal against Serbia, is a regular starter with Bournemouth. Randolph, however, hasn't been making West Ham squads and now appears to be third choice at the Premier League club.

Veteran midfielders James McCarthy, who recently joined Celtic, and Robbie Brady, currently without a club after leaving Burnley, are also omitted.

Ireland travel to Faro to take on Portugal at the Estádio Algarve on Wednesday, 1 September before returning home to take on Azerbaijan on Saturday, 4 September and Serbia on Tuesday, 7 September 7 at the Aviva Stadium.

They are joint bottom of group A and already facing a huge battle to contend for a play-off place.

Enda Stevens, Callum O'Dowda, Jason Knight and Chiedozie Ogbene have all been ruled out through injury whilst West Bromwich Albion striker Callum Robinson tested positive for Covid-19 this week, and is currently in isolation.

Burnley defender Nathan Collins receives his first call-up to the senior squad whilst Jamie McGrath and Andrew Omobamidele keep their places after impressing in the summer friendlies against Andorra and Hungary. There is no place for Bournemouth's highly-rated midfielder Gavin Kilkenny however.

Brighton and Hove Albion striker Aaron Connolly and Newcastle United midfielder Jeff Hendrick return to the squad having missed the summer international friendlies, with the squad set to fly out to Portugal on Sunday.
