Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted that his side "got away with one" following Manchester United's 3-2 win over Brighton.
Bruno Fernandes scored a penalty in the tenth minute of stoppage time to win a game in which the Red Devils were outplayed for long spells by a Brighton side that hit the woodwork five times.
"We got away with one," said the United manager.
"When they equalised I thought that's two points lost. Maybe one point was what we deserved - I don't think we deserved more but the character we showed deserved more."
After the woodwork was struck five times by the home side, the Norwegian joked: "We have to be grateful Jose (Mourinho) is not here to measure the goalposts, it might have been smaller goals!"
However, he added: "They created too much for my liking but they're a difficult side to play against, with really good ball players at the back.
"There is plenty of work (to be done) but sometimes you've just got to take the points.
"We know we need to improve a lot. Last week (at home to Crystal Palace) we were very disappointed not to get anything from the game but we showed the response today. We had too many draws last season, so that's a big plus for us."
Brighton boss Graham Potter said: "We had more chances and shots and hit the woodwork a few times but sometimes football's not fair - I have to accept that, as much as it's painful.
"We played with real courage and spirit - I'd say we deserved something from the game, I would say that's an understatement.
"I thought we scored with the last kick of the game - I don't know where the extra time came from to be honest.
"We are bitterly disappointed to concede the way we have, at the time we have."
