Shamrock Rovers and Ireland midfielder Jack Byrne has been named the 2019 PFAI Player of the Year.

The Hoops playmaker received the award at the Professional Footballers Association of Ireland's annual gala in Dublin, ahead of Dundalk duo Sean Gannon and Michael Duffy.

Ireland manager Mick McCarthy was on hand to present the award to the sole home-based member of the national squad, and the Dubliner was informed that he would have a role to play in Thursday's friendly clash with New Zealand.

McCarthy also slammed Derby County's decision to sack Ireland centre-half Richard Keogh following the recent incident at the English club, where team-mates Mason Bennett and Tom Lawrence were arrested for drink driving. 

Keogh was a back-seat passanger in one of the cars and suffered horrific leg injuries, which have ruled the Ireland defender out for over a year.

The Ireland manager said that he was astounded by the decision at the midlands club.

Meanwhile, Vinny Perth was named PFAI Manager of the Year, Bohemians and Ireland Under-21 midfielder Danny Mandroiu was awarded the young player award, Cabinteely's Rob Manley secured the First Division award, while Tim Clancy of Drogheda got the First DIvision manager's award.
