Vinny Perth saluted striker Pat Hoban after the forward broke the club scoring record in Dundalk's 2-1 win over Shamrock Rovers on Friday night.

Hoban's 70th strike in a Lilywhite jersey eclipsed Joey Donnelly's mark of 69, which had stood since 1943.

"Many famous footballers have played for this club and to break that record is phenomenal. To break it in 132 games is different class," manager Perth told RTÉ Sport.

"He gave huge credit this week to the players in the squad who create a lot of chances for him but ultimately he's got to be there to take them.

"I'm very proud to be working with a player of that stature."

Still just 27 years old, Hoban has time on his side as he seeks to extend the record.

"It's an absolute honour to do it. My first league goal was six years ago to this day," he said.

"I know I went away for a small spell a few years ago but to come back and score 29 goals last season, I've seven this season, and to beat such a record is just an honour, for such a club like Dundalk.

"It's just great having a great team around you who create you chances. I'm just there to put the ball in the net.

"I'm absolutely delighted to break such a good record for the club but I definitely want to set a marker now that will be hard to beat in the future.
