Arsenal say they have identified the man they believe is responsible for throwing a plastic bottle at Tottenham player Dele Alli during Wednesday night's Carabao Cup tie at the Emirates Stadium.

In a statement on their website, Arsenal said the whole club had "been embarrassed by the incident" and "behaviour of this type as no place at Emirates Stadium".

But after analysing CCTV footage, which showed him leaving after throwing the bottle at Alli as the Spurs midfielder took a throw-in, the club said they had "identified an image of the suspect".

The statement said: "We are liaising with the Metropolitan Police and investigations continue in order to apprehend the culprit."

The statement concluded by saying Arsenal could not be responsible for the actions of one individual but apologised to Alli and Spurs.

The club also promised that "anyone identified will receive a lengthy club ban and their details will be passed to the police to commence legal proceedings"

Alli, who put on a masterclass to guide Spurs through to a last-four tie with Chelsea, was struck by a missile in the second half having scored a sublime goal and set up Son Heung-min's opener for a 2-0 victory.

It earned revenge for Tottenham's 4-2 Premier League defeat to the Gunners just 17 days earlier, when a Spurs fan was arrested for throwing a banana skin at Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang.

The England international was unhurt and said the unsavoury incident "made the goal a little bit sweeter and the win."

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino praised Alli for the control he showed during the incident.

Pochettino told a press conference to preview Sunday's game at Everton: "It was an amazing reaction.

"In another country the player was going to be down on the pitch, Dele behaved really well, Arsenal should be grateful to him because the player could have gone down and created a massive problem.

"I think the behaviour was top from Dele, sometimes he is criticised but he was very mature."
