Dubliner Conor Masterson has been named in Liverpool’s squad for Sunday’s Premier League clash with Manchester United with Jurgen Klopp short of centre-half cover.

Right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold (foot) and Joel Matip (broken collarbone) this week joined Joe Gomez (fractured leg) on the injury list, leaving the Reds boss with just two fit centre-halves in Virgil van Dijk and Dejan Lovren.

The 20-year-old  was on the bench for the Champions League quarter-final win over Manchester City last season and has been an ever-present at the heart of the Liverpool Under-23 defence since returning from injury at the start of November.

Klopp has spoken previously of Masterson's confidence and the quality he can offer.

Masterson has risen through the ranks at Anfield since joining the club from Lucan United in 2012 and is a former captain of the Liverpool U18s

Nathaniel Clyne has returned to fitness but midfielder James Milner is likely to start on the right side of defence.

Provisional squad: Alisson, Milner, Lovren, Van Dijk, Robertson, Fabinho, Wijnaldum, Shaqiri, Firmino, Mane, Salah, Mignolet, Moreno, Masterson, Phillips, Henderson, Keita, Sturridge, Origi, Camacho.
