Kenny Cunningham has emerged as a surprise candidate to replace Liam Buckley as manager of St. Patrick’s Athletic.

Buckley brought to an end six years in charge at Inchicore last month after struggling again this season and the Irish Examiner reports that the former Republic of Ireland international has held talks with the club.

Pat Fenlon and Paul Doolin have been heavily linked with the job, but the paper reports that 47-year-old Cunningham impressed the club with his ambition for the role.

The 72-cap international obtained his Uefa Pro Licence in 2010 and his most recent coaching role was a brief stint with the Republic of Ireland U19s.
