Stoke City manager Mark Hughes is hopeful that midfielder Glenn Whelan will be available for selection against Tottenham Hotspur after missing the 4-1 defeat to Liverpool with a freak injury.

The Republic of Ireland international had been an ever-present until last weekend’s loss, but a back injury suffered after getting out of his car ruled him out.

The Potters take on title-chasing Spurs in Monday's Barclays Premier League clash at the Britannia Stadium.

Hughes is also hoping that forward Marko Arnautovic recovers from a knee injury in time.

Jakob Haugaard is expected to keep his place ahead of Shay Given despite conceding six goals in the two games he has stood in for the injured Jack Butland.

“Jakob has had a run in the side and we talked about the game last week," Hughes said.

"We discussed all elements of it and for the most part I have been pleased with what he has done.

"He is a young goalkeeper, and he is learning about the Premier League. You have to experience it before you understand the intensity, so that is why it was right to give him the opportunity.”
