Former Republic of Ireland international Sean St Ledger has been released by Ipswich Town without making an appearance for the club.

St Ledger, who turned 30 on Sunday, only joined the Tractor Boys on a short-term deal last month, after being unable to find a club following his summer departure from Leicester City.

Ipswich manager Mick McCarthy said that he had enough defensive cover, and that retaining St Ledger's services would only serve to block his younger players' development.

“Sean’s gone back,” he told the East Anglian Daily Times. "I have got young Matt Clarke, who is excellent, and I would not stand in his way by having someone who I don’t think is going to do any better than him. I would play Matt.

“I also have Elliott Hewitt out at Colchester with a 24-hour recall so I am not going to put a block on their progression by taking someone in.”

St Ledger may now seek to join Ireland captain Robbie Keane in the MLS, having previously told RTÉ he had had some interest from clubs in the US.
