Sligo Rovers striker Danny North has been named the Airtricity/Soccer Writers’ Association of Ireland Player of the Month for November.

North scored two crucial goals before setting up Anthony Elding’s winner in last Sunday’s FAI Ford Cup Final win over Drogheda United

This is the third time in as many seasons that North has won the award – he also won it with St Patrick’s Athletic in June 2011 and with Sligo in June 2012.

“I think this was my only chance to win the award this season,” joked North, who has struggled with injuries and was introduced from the bench in Sunday’s thrilling final.

Drogheda United’s Paul O’Conor was second in the voting, while Bray Wanderers midfielder Gary Dempsey came in third.

"People can call me super-sub if they want, it’s not a bad thing really"

But North was the clear frontrunner after his dramatic impact in the Cup Final and he doesn’t mind being labelled a ‘super-sub’.

“People can call me super-sub if they want, it’s not a bad thing really as someone like Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made a career out of it and look at how it worked out for him,” said North.

“I was obviously gutted not to be in the starting 11 for the Final, but I knew it was touch and go between me and Elds [Elding] and he got the nod.

"But I always felt that I could make an impact once I got on the pitch.”
