Paul Doolin has been confirmed as the new manager of Cork City.

The former Drogheda United supremo had been in negotiations for a number of days with Cork owner Tom Coughlan and succeeds Alan Mathews at Turner's Cross.

Doolin won the Premier Division title, the FAI Cup and two Setanta Sports Cups with Drogheda.

The new man at the helm told the official Cork City website that he was looking forward to the new challenge.

'First and foremost I would like to thank Tom Coughlan and Cork City for giving me the opportunity to manage the club,' Doolin said.

'Cork City is a big club with proud history, a club which has been successful and we want to build on that.

'I think Tom has a vision to bring the club forward and I am delighted to be a part of that. There are some very good players already at the club, and I am looking forward to working with them.'

Coughlan expressed his delight at the appointment, saying: 'I'm thrilled that Paul has signed up to lead our team in our challenge for all the major honours next season.

'Our search for new players begins now, and we look forward to more exciting announcements in next few weeks.'

Doolin's future at Drogheda was compromised by the club's dire financial situation which jeopardises not only their Premier Division status, but their entire survival.

The 45-year-old will be officially unveiled as Cork boss at a press conference on Thursday and will meet the squad on Friday after signing a two-year contract.
