Kidd favourite to succeed McClaren

The English FA will try to appoint a new assistant coach for the national team before next month's friendly with Australia with Brian Kidd favourite for the job. Eriksson has been involved in discussions with the FA about whether a full-time or part-time appointment will be made to replace Steve McClaren.

A three-man shortlist is understood to have been drawn up, with Kidd apparently joined on it by Under-21 coach David Platt and one of Eriksson's past assistants, Peter Taylor.

While England youth coach Stuart Baxter had been one of the early candidates, it is now thought that Eriksson will not turn to him despite his admiration for his development and scouting work. No final decision has yet been taken, although the expectation is that the FA will shortly approach Leeds to ask permission to turn to Kidd, who is working under Terry Venables at Elland Road.

Eriksson still retains the services of his right-hand man, Tord Grip, as well as Liverpool's Sammy Lee, but ideally wants his new man in place for the build-up to the friendly against Australia on February 12 at Upton Park.
