Shels stretch lead to seven points

Shelbourne have stretched their lead to seven points at the top of the Eircom Premier League after a 2-0 win over Shamrock Rovers at Tolka Park this afternoon.

Shels were gifted a goal after 14 minutes when Gareth Cronin put the ball into his own net with goalkeeper Tony O’Dowd stranded off his line. But there was nothing lucky about their second goal when captain Owen Heary burst through from midfield and drilled the ball low past the despairing dive of O’Dowd on the stroke of half-time.

The second half saw Shels hang on relatively comfortably to their lead to guarantee the three points. St Pat’s now trail them by seven points although the Richmond Park side have three games in hand.

Meanwhile, in today's other eircom Premier Division match, UCD extended their recent good home form when they beat Cork City 1-0 at Belfield thanks to Alan McNally's 56th minute winner.
