Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard was today forced to pull out of England's friendly against Sweden this weekend because of a groin problem. Gerrard sustained the injury during training yesterday and was sent back to Liverpool for further treatment after the problem was reassessed this morning as manager Sven Goran Eriksson did not want to take any chances with his fitness.
Gerrard's Liverpool team-mate Michael Owen could also be withdrawn from the squad although a final decision on his participation will not be taken until tomorrow. The striker's hamstring problems have resurfaced and he could be rested as a precautionary measure despite taking part in yesterday's training session without suffering any major problem.
"Michael has experienced a slight discomfort in his hamstring. He first noticed it during Liverpool's game against Manchester United on Sunday. It has not got any worse since then but he has received treatment and will be further reassessed tomorrow," explained FA spokesperson Paul Newman.
