Newcastle and Villa win Intertoto matches

Newcastle completed a comprehensive 3-1 victory over 1860 Munich to take a giant step towards the UEFA Cup - but they were made to fight all the way. Gary Speed gave the home side the perfect start with a fifth-minute header, but Markus Schroth dragged the Germans back into just before half-time, before late strikes from substitute Lomana Lua-Lua and Nolberto Solano from the penalty spot wrapping it up for the Tynesiders.

Elsewhere, David Ginola provided the ammunition for Dion Dublin to fire Aston Villa to within 180 minutes of realising their UEFA Cup hopes. Ginola created the only goal of the game in the fifth minute to help take Villa through to one of the three Intertoto Cup finals against Swiss side Basle on the away goals rule.
