Riot police last night fired tear gas to disperse a crowd of rowdy football supporters in downtown Brussels after co-hosts Belgium beat Sweden 2-1 in the opening match of Euro 2000. Trouble flared at the Grande Place, the city's central square, just after 11pm last night when bottles were thrown and the police, armed with batons and shields, responded with charges and tear gas. Some people were reportedly injured, and others taken into custody. The match itself, which took place at the King Baudouin Stadium, had passed off without any trouble.
