Gerard Greene battled past James Cahill 6-5 in the second qualifying round for the World Snooker Championship on Friday evening.

Greene had led a frame-for-frame encounter 4-3 but the Englishman hit back with a couple of frames on the bounce.

Northern Ireland's Greene responded brilliantly however, levelling the match before holding his nerve in the decider to march on.

Speaking to RTÉ Sport before today's defeat, Northern Irishman Greene said a failure to progress would likely cost him his tour card.

Today's result at the English Institute of Sport means he joins surprise Welsh Open winner Jordan Brown as the only Irishmen left with a chance of joining 13th seed Mark Allen at the Crucible next week.

Brown faces Steven Hallworth in the third and penultimate qualifying round on Monday.

On Thursday night, world no 111 Fergal O'Brien lost 6-2 to Stuart Carrington (52), who made two century breaks.
