Options for Farrell as Ireland freshen up for Pumas

So, how do you follow that?

Andy Farrell's side produced what is being hailed as one of, if not the most, impressive 80 minutes of high-intensity Test rugby from an Irish team in living memory.

It wasn't perfect, but it was pretty close.

Farrell said after Saturday’s match that he will seek to freshen up the team for the visit of Los Pumas (Sunday, 2.15pm, live on RTÉ).

"We’ll see, like I said at the start of the campaign there might be a balancing act when it comes to peoples’ tanks, with injuries etc.," he said.

Mario Ledesma’s side beat Italy 37-16 on Saturday and lost to France two weeks ago.

They have lost seven of the last eight meetings with Ireland, the odd one out there, of course, being the World Cup quarter-final in 2015.

But their record in Dublin is brutal, they have lost nine from nine in the Irish capital, the most recent a 28-17 defeat in November 2018. Safe to say, they tend to peak against Ireland in knock-out games.

Farrell wouldn’t be able to drop a player on form from last Saturday but after such exertions, given there was only one change from the Japan game, it would be cruel to put all of the same horses out three weeks in a row.

That said, defeat to next Sunday's visitors would take some of the shine off what is a successful series and Farrell, with his team on a seven-game winning streak, will want to keep some of his front-liners active.

But the back-ups, as per the pecking order in this series, aren’t too shabby.

Returning star Simon Zebo and Leinster utility player Jordan Larmour are among the backs who have not seen a minute’s action.

Lions Keith Earls, Peter O’Mahony and Conor Murray have been used sparingly off the bench, while Robbie Henshaw was recovering from a foot injury and is expected to be available.

Injury has ruled out-half and captain Johnny Sexton out of the equation, but Gavin Coombes has recovered from illness to make a claim for a back row spot.

James Ryan has played every minute so far and looks back to his best but a rest could be in order.

Farrell may stick with his on-form front row, not least because getting the better of the Pumas pack tends to set the tone.

Gavin Coombes is back in contention following illness and could have Munster team-mate O’Mahony for comfort.
