Ireland's Mikey Russell has returned home from the Rugby League World Cup following the death of his brother Liam, team manager Richard Egan has announced.

Russell, who came through the Irish domestic competition to earn a contract with League 1 part-timers Coventry in 2017, is a travelling reserve with Mark Aston's 24-man squad, who play Papua New Guinea in their second group game on Sunday.

Egan said: "The thoughts of the squad and all involved in RLI are with Mikey, his parents, family and friends at this time.

"As a mark of respect, the team will wear black armbands in the game against Papua New Guinea and before the game the squad will share a moment together on the field."
