Leinster's exciting fly-half Joey Carbery could be out of action for up to eight weeks, according to reports, after undergoing surgery to address an ankle problem.
Carbery was diagnosed as suffering from ligament damage after suffering a knock in the province’s 37-10 thrashing of Northampton in the Champions Cup last Friday.
The 21-year-old has made huge strides since signing his first professional contract at the end of the summer, impressing for both club and country.
The former Clontarf star made his international debut as a substitute in the historic 40-29 victory over New Zealand in Chicago in November and also figured in the wins over Canada and Australia.
Carbery’s injury makes him a major doubt for Ireland’s opening fixtures in the RBS 6 Nations Championship against Scotland (4 February) and Italy (11 February).
