Ewen McKenzie has resigned as Australia's head coach following the Wallabies' 29-28 loss to New Zealand.
McKenzie had come under pressure following Australia's disappointing performance in this year's Rugby Championship and had recently become embroiled in a controversy involving Kurtley Beale and a member of McKenzie's back-room staff.
Australia have never beaten New Zealand during McKenzie's time in charge, and following Saturday's loss in the third Bledisloe Cup Test the Australian Rugby Union announced that he had resigned.
Australia are due to face Ireland in the upcoming November internationals, and the search will now begin to find a successor to McKenzie.
There has been speculation in Australia linking former Leinster head coach Michael Cheika, currently head coach with the Waratahs, with the role.
Australian Rugby Union CEO Bill Pulver paid tribute to McKenzie, who led Australia in 22 Tests since starting in the role in August 2013.
“I did not ask Ewen to resign, but understand his decision," Pulver said. "He informed me this morning of his intention to resign, regardless of tonight’s result.
Pulver said the process to find a replacement had now begun.
“We hope to have the new head coach in place before the team leaves for the spring tour [November internationals] on Friday.”
