Rugby Championship team news: Pollard starts for Springboks against New Zealand

Handre Pollard comes in at out-half for the Springboks

South Africa coach Heyneke Meyer has replaced fly-half Morne Steyn with Handre Pollard for the Springboks' Rugby Championship clash against New Zealand in Wellington on Saturday (8.35am).

The swap at number 10 is the only change from the match-day 23 that lost a cliff-hanger 24-23 to Australia in Perth last weekend.

Captain Jean de Villiers will celebrate his 100th Test cap for South Africa at inside centre in the match at Wellington Stadium, joining centurions Victor Matfield (114), John Smit (111), Percy Montgomery (102) and Bryan Habana (100).

South Africa lie second in the four-nation southern hemisphere championship behind the All Blacks after three rounds but can leapfrog their opponents with victory in Wellington.

Fly-half Aaron Cruden has returned to the New Zealand starting side after recovering from a chest injury.

Cruden (below) suffered the injury in the All Blacks' 51-20 victory over Australia last month at Eden Park and coach Steve Hansen decided to rest the 25-year-old pivot for last week's clash against Argentina.

Cruden's absence allowed Beauden Barrett to make his first start at fly-half in Napier where he impressed with his attacking instincts, tactical kicking and control of the match, though he had a poor night with his goalkicking, missing four shots.

Barrett has shifted to the bench for Saturday's match with Colin Slade dropping out of the match-day squad of 23.

The All Blacks are the only unbeaten side in the Rugby Championship and Hansen said they were well aware the Springboks would be fired up after their narrow loss last week.

"This week we have to find a desperation and hunger in our performance because we know that that is something the South Africans will be bringing after their loss to Australia," Hansen said in a statement.

"As well they have already stated they have a desire to get a win against us.

"After two wonderful matches last year, I know our guys are really looking forward to this match.

"We have the utmost respect for South Africa and looking forward to Saturday."

Hansen was forced to make two other changes to his starting side with lock Sam Whitelock and loose forward Liam Messam ruled out earlier this week for at least a month after they suffered injuries in Napier.

"We have the utmost respect for South Africa and looking forward to Saturday"

Wellington lock Jeremy Thrush, who came on for Whitelock last week, has been elevated to the starting side, while Steven Luatua has come onto the blindside of the scrum after having provided cover for lock/loose forward from the bench in the first two clashes against Australia.

Auckland lock Patrick Tuipulotu, who has not been considered until this week due to an ankle injury, has recovered enough to move onto the bench.

Wellington winger Cory Jane has also come into the replacements' bench in place of rookie centre Malakai Fekitoa to provide cover for the outside backs.

Australia welcome hooker Tatafu Polota-Nau (above) back from injury for Saturday's Test against Argentina (11.05am) but there was a snub for Scott Higginbotham when Ben McCalman was named as starting number eight.

The return of Polota-Nau, who has not played since he injured his knee in the Super Rugby final, could not have come at a better time with the Wallabies expecting a serious challenge in the front row from the Pumas on the Gold Coast.

The switch at hooker was the only one of the three changes from the team that beat South Africa that was not forced on coach Ewen McKenzie.

Peter Betham comes in on the right wing for Adam Ashley-Cooper, who was ruled out with a neck injury, while McCalman replaces Wycliff Palu, who suffered a head knock against the South Africans.

Argentina coach Daniel Hourcade has switched his wingers and replaced suspended lock Tomas Lavanini with Matias Alemanno.

Juan Imhoff (above) has been promoted to the right wing from the bench to replace Horacio Agulla with Manuel Montero coming in for Lucas Gonzalez Amorosino on the left wing in the team named on Wednesday.

Alemanno, named on the bench for Argentina's 28-9 loss to New Zealand last week, will start against the Wallabies after Lavanini was banned for a week for charging into a ruck and making contact with All Blacks captain Richie McCaw.

Hourcade has shaken up his bench, bringing front rower Bruno Postiglioni, flanker Benjamin Macome and centre Jernimo De la Fuente into the match-day 23 as Argentina bid to break their winless record in their third season.
