Kieren Fallon moved quickly to tighten his grip on the jockeys' title by pinching another winner from his main rival Richard Hughes at Haydock today. Just 24 hours after picking up a 13-day ban and seeing his odds to retain the crown pushed out by bookmakers, the Irishman responded like a true champion by scoring on Coquetry to move further clear at the top of the table.
He is 14 ahead of second-placed Hughes, whose own suspension cost him the ride on the 1-3 favourite for retaining owner Khalid Abdullah in the opening EBF Maiden Stakes. Fallon took full advantage, sending his mount to the front a furlong out for a five-length victory over Telepathic.
'It is nice to take another winner off Richard!' Fallon said. 'I did it at York on Wednesday as well. The jockeys' championship is going to be interesting this year,' added the Clareman, who warned that the third placed rider should not be ignored. 'Seb Sanders is still in with a shout and he is a great bet at 20-1 each-way! he quipped.
