A day of almosts for the Irish on Day 14 in Rio, while on the track Usain Bolt completed his third clean sweep in a row as Jamaica took 4x100m gold.
- Competing in his fifth Olympics, 50k race walker Rob Heffernan finished in sixth place in a gruelling event. His teammate Brendan Boyce also secured a top twenty finish.
- 25-year-old Natalya Coyle was in with a shout of medal in the modern pentathlon, but ultimately finished in a very credible seventh place. The Meath woman was delighted with her performance.
- The Irish women golfer's medal hopes appear to have been ended after a rough third day of action in Rio. Leona Maguire and Stephanie Meadow are 11 and 12 shots off the lead respectively.
- Britain's Nick Sketlon was a hugely popular winner of the individual show jumping competition. The 58-year-old proved there's a grain of truth in the saying 'the old dog for the hard road'.
- There was another gold for Britain in the women's hockey competition. Team GB won their first medal in the event after a shootout with the Netherlands.
- Serbia are in the men's basketball final for the first time. The men from the Balkans defeated Australia to set up a final clash with the United States.

- On the track, Vivian Cheruiyot of Kenya set a new Olympic record as she overcame 10,000m record breaker Almaz Ayana to take 5,000m gold
- Allyson Felix became the first woman to win five Olympic golds in athletics as the United States made the most of their second chance to take 4x100m gold.
- Annnnd finally, Usain Bolt has equalled Paavo Nurmi and Carl Lewis' record of nine Olympic golds by running the anchor leg as Jamaica once again took the 4x100m relay title.
