On another fascinating day of Olympic competition in Rio de Janeiro, America's swimming team helped propel the United States to the top of the medal table.
- Michael Phelps claimed his record 19th Olympic gold medal, and 23rd medal overall, as part of the victorious 4x100 freestyle relay team.
- New pool queen Katie Ledecky grabbed the first of what looks set to be several Olympic titles by smashing her own 400 freestyle world record. There were also golds (and records) for Britain's Adam Peaty and Sara Sjostrom, who became the first Swedish woman to win gold in the pool.
- Ireland's Shane Ryan marked his Olympic debut by reaching the semi-finals of the 100m backstroke, where he finished 16th overall, but there was disappointment for Fiona Doyle, who failed to progress from the heats of the 100 breaststroke.
- Steven Donnelly (pictured) and David Oliver Joyce both enjoyed opening round wins in the boxing ring. Donnelly defeated Algeria's Zohir Kadiche, while Joyce beat Andrique Allisop of the Seychelles.
- There were several shocks in the tennis competition. World No.1 Novak Djokovic was beaten by Juan Martin del Potro, while, the Williams sisters and the Murray brothers are both out of the doubles competitions.
- Ireland are well placed in three-day eventing, lying fifth overall after the dressage, while Jonty Evans is best placed in the individual rankings in ninth.
- There was a second defeat for the Irish men's hockey team, who fell to a 5-0 loss to the fancied Dutch.
- Ellis O'Reilly created a piece of history by becoming Ireland's first female gymnast to compete at the Games, but the story of the day was the performance of the American team led by Simone Biles, who recorded the three highest scores in qualifying. Biles could become the first woman to win five golds at a single Games.
- Ireland's rowers were left kicking their heels as windy conditions saw the postponement of racing at the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon.
- Brazil's men's soccer team were jeered off the pitch after a 0-0 draw with Iraq left them in danger of missing out on the knockout stages. The hosts also drew with South Africa and must now beat group leaders Denmark to be sure of qualification.
- There were mixed emotions for the Dutch after the women's cycling road race. Anna van der Breggen claimed gold in a thrilling finish, but the thoughts of the peloton were with her team-mate Annemiek van Vleuten, who is in intensive care after a horrific crash on the final descent.
- The USA now lead the medal table, with a total of 12 medals.
