Chile's Nicolas Massu got the defence of his Olympic singles tennis gold under way on Monday with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Belgian Steve Darcis.
Massu, who also won the doubles gold in the Athens Games four years ago with Fernando Gonzalez, will now play Argentina's David Nalbandian - a 6-2, 6-1 winner over China's Zeng Shaoxuan - in the second round.
Massu turned the tennis world on its head when, with a ranking of 14, he became the only men's player to win both titles at the same Games in the modern era.
Now 28, and listed at 125th in the world, the Chilean needed an invitation from the International Tennis Federation (ITF) to compete in the Chinese capital.
