Rain today played havoc with the opening day's action in the Olympic tennis tournament in Beijing with Roger Federer among those players unable to set foot on court.

Only nine matches were completed as heavy rain caused numerous delays throughout the day, and play was eventually called off at 7pm local time.

Federer had been due to play Russian Dmitry Tursunov in the opening round of the men's singles, while Spain's Rafael Nadal and compatriot Tommy Robredo were due to face Swedish pair Jonas Bjorkman and Robin Soderling in the doubles.

Women's fourth seed Serena Williams was 6-3 2-1 up on Olga Govortsova from Belarus before play was abandoned, while 10th seed Daniela Hantuchova led Japan's Ai Sugiyama 6-2 3-0.

In the completed matches, there were straight sets victories for eighth seed James Blake over Australian Chris Guccione, fourth seed Nikolay Davydenko over Latvia's Ernests Gulbis and 12th seed Fernando Gonzalez over China's Sun Peng.

Tomas Berdych also only dropped only three games in disposing over China's Yu Xinyuan.

Canada's Frederic Niemeyer won the first set against Guillermo Canas before retiring with an elbow injury at 4-2 down in the second set, but expects to be fit to partner Daniel Nestor in the doubles against British pair Andy and Jamie Murray.

In the women's singles there were wins for Italy's Francesca Schiavone, Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki and Australian Samantha Stosur.
