Elite sport can continue in Northern Ireland despite new restrictions imposed by Stormont this morning in a bid to try to reduce the spread of Covid-19 in communities.

Elite sport has been deemed an exception, with no indoor or organised contact activity involving household mixing allowed to take place.

Spectators will no longer be permitted to attend games, with no mass events involving more than 15 people, apart from high-level sport.

The restrictions will last four weeks.

The continuation of elite sport will be a relief to sporting organisations on both sides of the border, with a number of matches coming up.

Longford have asked Croke Park to move their Allianz League Division 3 fixture against Derry out of Derry City.

The fixture is scheduled for Saturday next at Celtic Park.

The GAA's CCCC will reconvene today to review the Covid-19 situation in the North following today's announcement by First Minister Arlene Foster and Deputy Michelle O’Neill.

Fermanagh have lodged a request to the Central Competitions Control Committee for a postponement of Sunday's league game against Clare in Ennis. A decision is due tonight.

A total of 10 players tested positive for coronavirus and a further seven panel members are isolating.

Ulster Rugby will play in the Guinness Pro 14 next week, while players will be required to travel south to feature for Ireland in the remainder of the Six Nations and November internationals.

Derry City have four SSE Airtricity Premier Division matches remaining, along with a FAI Cup quarter-final in Sligo.

Northern Ireland will host a play-off final for a place in Euro 2020 on 12 November in Windsor Park.

The Irish FA released a brief statement acknowledging the announcement.

"We are actively seeking more detail and clarification to understand fully what this means for football in Northern Ireland at all levels," said the IFA.

Down Royal's race meeting at the end of the month will be able to go ahead.

The track hosts a major two-day card on 30 and 31 October, with the Grade One Ladbrokes Champion Chase the highlight of the fixture on the second day of action.
