Ireland’s Niamh McCarthy has won a bronze medal in the discus at the IPC Athletics World Championships in Doha.
Competing at her first major championships, the Cork athlete belied her lack of experience to finish third with a best effort of 23.66 metres in the F41 class opened to competitors of short stature.
Raoua Tlili set a new world record of 29.70 to claim gold, while her Tunisian compatriot Fathia Amaimia seized silver with a throw of 24.83.

Michael McKillop advanced to the final of the 800 metres in the T38 category for athletes with cerebral palsy.
The multiple Paralympic Games gold medallist clocked a season’s best of two minutes 7.16 seconds to reach Saturday evening’s final (5.54pm Irish time).
Reigning T13 100m and 200m champion and world record holder Jason Smyth comfortably won his 100m semi-final for ivsually impaired athletes in a time of 10.76 .
Smyth runs in the final at 4.25pm on Saturday.
