Cuala aiming for Leinster glory after breaking long Dublin drought

Cuala are aiming to become the first Dublin winners of the Leinster Club Senior Hurling Championship since 1979.

Crumlin secured the capital’s only provincial win back in 1979, but now Cuala are just one win away from taking the crown.

They beat Clara of Kilkenny in Sunday’s semi-final, to add to the scalp of Offaly’s Coolderry, and now Wexford champions Oulart-the-Ballagh stand in their way in the final on Sunday, November 29.

“This bunch of guys are working very, very hard for the past 18 months,” manager Mattie Kenny told RTÉ Radio 1's Sunday Sport.

“The first target was to win a county championship, which they hadn't done for 21 years, and once you achieve that you look to go as far as you can in this competition.

“We beat St Jude's in the Dublin final on a Saturday night and we had a good night after that, but the next morning all the lads went down to the sea for a swim and they all said 'we are going to have a right cut off this'.

“We had Coolderry a week later, a formidable challenge, and that game went well for us and then Clara seven days later.

“We have a lot of hurling played the last five weeks. The lads are tired but we have two weeks off now to re-energise and focus on the Leinster final.”

Cuala will be without both Paul Schutte and Shane Stapleton in that decider.

Neither of them played in the win over Clara following surgery on ankle and shoulder injuries respectively and the pair won’t play again in 2015.

Oulart, like Cuala, have never won a Leinster senior crown, though they have come close on a number of occasions recently, losing four consecutive finals between 2010 and 2013.

“They’re a very experienced team, perennial winners of Wexford and doing very well in the Leinster Championship,” said Kenny.

“They have come up short a few times but they have momentum on their side and they have the motivation from the hurt of those losses on their side so it's going to be a huge challenge.”

Kenny was a selector under Galway manager Anthony Cunningham when they lost to Kilkenny in the 2012 All-Ireland final replay.

Cunningham is under pressure to keep that job following a recent player revolt and if he leaves the post Kenny will no doubt be linked with taking over following his success with Cuala.

Once again, Dublin star David Treacy (pictured above) was one of Cuala's men men against Clara.
