Golf clubs to allow four-balls, members' guests and competitions from next week

Four-balls and competitions will be permitted at golf clubs from Monday 8 June as the sport moves into the second phase of the government's roadmap for lifting Covid-19 restrictions.

As a non-contact sport, Golf was one of the first to resume - along with tennis - a fortnight ago.

However, since then access has been restricted to members living within 5km of their club, with groups of maximum three players teeing off at 14-minute intervals.

On 8 June, it will be permitted to travel up to 20km, and up to four members (or members' guests) can play at 14-minute intervals, or shorter intervals for pairs/threeballs.

A joint statement from the Golfing Union of Ireland and Irish Ladies Golf Union said that outdoor group activities can also resume during this phase and that the process of reintroducing junior activity to golf clubs is included in their updated protocols.

Social gatherings remain banned and clubhouse facilities are limited to using toilets and equipment lockers.

Strict observance of physical distancing, remote booking and prohibitions on touching bunker rakes or flag pins remain.

The unions reiterated that there remains "a major responsibility on golf clubs and golfers to ensure that our sport is conducted in a safe and responsible manner" and that "Full adherence to the provisions of this Protocol is absolutely essential."

"Golf is in the very privileged position to have been allowed to resume at this stage and this return has been based on the sport being able to demonstrate to government that it can take place in a safe, socially distant manner."
