Graeme McDowell will compete in this year’s Open at Royal Troon having been added to the field as one of the highest-ranked non-exempt players.
The 2010 US Open winner, currently ranked world number 76, would otherwise have had to claim one of four qualifying places at the upcoming French and Scottish Opens.
The Portrush golfer's best finish in the Open was four years ago when he was tied for fifth place.
McDowell, who made himself unavailable for Ireland's Olympics team last week, joins Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry, Padraig Harrington and Darren Clarke in the 156-man field, while a number of Irish players are in final qualifying action this week.
The tournament takes place in Scotland from 14-17 July.
