Former Open champion John Daly today revealed he had suffered a mini-stroke. Daly, who won the Open at St Andrews in 1995, told PA Sport it had been caused by a reaction to diet pills he had been taking.
However, the 36-year-old was given the all-clear to travel to the Belfry for this week's Benson and Hedges International, and flew in from Chicago this morning. Daly, who also won the 1991 USPGA Championship after being called into the tournament as ninth alternate, has been advised to give up smoking but admits that will be very difficult.
Daly has not played since the WorldCom Classic at Hilton Head in mid-April since suffering a hand injury playing a shot from thick rough.
