Former British Open champion John Daly has taken up his option to join the 2002 European Tour and is eligible for the Tour exemption in two categories, a tour official said today. "John Daly has joined the European Tour on category one, as a former major winner with a 10-year exemption, while he is also eligible to play this season on category three, after winning last year's BMW International Open in Munich," the official told Reuters.
Daly, who won the 1995 British Open at St Andrews after a playoff with Italy's Costantino Rocca, would be able to exercise his 10-year exemption on the European Tour until the end of the 2005 season, the official added. "For the first time, everything in my life is the way I want it," Daly said. "I almost did it last year, but now I have and I think it's not only a good move on my part, but also good for golf and, hopefully, good for the European Tour.”
