Four points in the closing minutes swept Tipperary to victory over Galway in Division 1 of the National Hurling League at Semple Stadium today and maintained the Premier County's unbeaten run after three games.
After draws with Limerick and Cork this was Tipp's first win and Jason Forde set them on the way with a goal after five minutes. They led at the water break 1-04 to 0-03.
Noel McGrath had a second Tipperary goal in the 29th minute for a 2-7 to 0-6 advantage but Galway, with Joe Canning on target from frees, finished the half strongly with five unanswered points to be only two points adrift at the break, 0-11 to 2-7.
By the end of the third quarter, Galway had cut the lead to a point, 0-16 to 2-11.
They never headed Tipperary in the last quarter and with both managers emptying their benches, it was the home county which finished the strongest reeling off four points without reply to secure their first win.
Galway’s challenge was not helped by the loss of Jarlath Mannion to a straight red card five minutes from time.
It was a big win for Tipperary with Cathal Barrett, Barry Heffernan, Ronan Maher, John O Dwyer, and Noel McGrath the key men while debutant Robert Byrne also doing well.
It wasn't all good news for Tipperary with Liam Sheedy confirming afterwards that Patrick 'Bonner' Maher, who missed the game through injury, is ruled out for the season.
Galway fielded a much changed side from that which defeated All-Ireland champions Limerick in the previous round, Padraic Mannion, Joe Canning, Brian Concannon and sub Evan Niland were best.
