Squad depth will be key - Alan Cadogan

Alan Cadogan says Cork's squad depth will be crucial as they begin the defence of their Munster title on Sunday.

The Rebels welcome Tipperary to Páirc Uí Chaoimh with Cork GAA chairperson Tracey Kennedy insisting that the pitch is up to the job, after receiving criticism during the Allianz League.

With four games to come over the six weeks of the provincial championships, squad rotational will be critical according to Cadogan.

"It's all about a panel now of 25 guys," he told RTÉ Sport. "You're going to have fellas pick up sicknesses, injuries, especially when you're playing every week. So you have to have those five or six fellas to come off the bench.

"We feel ourselves that we have strength in our panel this year."

The GAA allowed Seamus Harnedy to use the final Allianz League game against Kilkenny to serve his ban, after agreeing that it didn't count as a proper play-off because there was no promotion or relegation at stake.

"He's (Seamus Harnedy) one of our main leaders, he's our captain," says Cadogan.

"Whether it be Cork, Tipp, Limerick, you don't want to see a fella whose an experienced guy, like Seamus, missing any Championship games.

"It's great to have him involved. It's good for Cork, and in general it's good for the Cork public to see your captain lining out in the day."

Cadogan missed the entirety of the 2018 Championship after undergoing surgery on an injured knee, and he says he's can't wait to get going this time around.

"This will be my first year where I'll experience it, week-in week-out, so it's something that I'm looking forward to.

"From a players' point of view, it's good, it's more games. From a spectators' point of view, they're getting to see top inter-county players play week-in and week-out, so it can only be positive.

"Any time you go out and you start off a Championship you have certain goals. When you look at the teams in Munster, it's a very, very competitive Championship, it's like a battlefield.

"League form goes out of it. Tipperary have been going very well. They're revitalised with Liam Sheedy involved."
