Waterford full-back Barry Coughlan has announced his retirement from inter-county hurling career at the age of 28.

The Ballygunner clubman, who won a Division 1 league title in 2015, spent six seasons in the Déise colours.

Coughlan’s announcement comes just after Páraic Fanning’s appointment as senior boss, though the Irish Examiner report states that the player’s decision had nothing to do with the new management ticket.

Waterford will begin 2019 in Division 1B of the Allianz League.
