Wexford and Clare meet in the championship for the first time since 2014 when it took extra-time in a replay to separate them in an All-Ireland qualifier.

They also went to extra-time in the first game.

The second game ended with Wexford winning by 2-25 to 2-22 in Innovate Wexford Park, which ended Clare’s reign as All-Ireland champions.

It also took extra-time to separate them in the 2013 qualifiers when Clare won.

Form Guide

Speaking after last weekend's win over Westmeath, Davy Fitzgerald offered nothing more than the 'we have to do better if we want to beat Clare' line.

"We won't win an All-Ireland quarter-final playing like that," the double Liam MacCarthy-winner told RTÉ Sport after the 11-point win. "We won't live with Clare playing like that."

Wexford, of course, earned that play-off courtesy of a third-place finish in the Leinster Championship. That run included wins over Dublin and Offaly but the two defeats, to Galway and Kilkenny, came in their last two round-robin games.

Clare were beaten Munster finalists (a 2-24 to 3-19 loss to Cork) having defeated Waterford, Tipperary and Limerick on the path to the final.

Former Offaly star Michael Duignan told RTÉ Sport: "The key area of interest will be the running game of Clare versus the sweeper system deployed by Wexford. When Limerick went with a sweeper in the second half, the Banner demolished them.

"Ultimately, though, I think it will come down to a battle between Liam Ryan and John Conlon, both have been in outstanding form so far. I just have a feeling that Clare might sneak it."

This will be Clare’s 13th appearance in the quarter-finals, having won five, lost five and drawn two of their previous twelve.

This will be Wexford’s eighth quarter-final appearance, having won three and lost four of their previous seven.

Their last win was in 2007 when they beat Tipperary. They have since lost four times.

Weather

Misty and mostly cloudy in Munster, with just short glimpses of hazy sunshine in eastern parts of the province. Some rain and drizzle also in Atlantic coastal areas, with some patches of fog also. Moderate south to southwest winds will be fresh along exposed coasts. Close and humid, with top temperatures 17C to 19C.
