Fitzgerald: Wexford won't live with Clare playing like that

Wexford manager Davy Fitzgerald has demanded an improvement in performance if his team are to stand any chance of defeating Clare in the upcoming All-Ireland SHC quarter-final.

The Yellowbellies saw off the challenge of Westmeath on a  2-21 to 0-16 scoreline in Mulligar, but were far from impressive in the quarter-final preliminary fixture.

Wexford hit 14 wides and spurned a number of goal chances and Fitzgerald believes such profligacy will be punished by a Banner side hurting from their recent Munster final defeat.

"I thought we were very comfortable to tell you the truth," he told RTÉ Sport. "We missed two or three open goals and could have won it by more.

"In fairness to Westmeath they kept trying, kept fighting away."

"Would I be happy with our display? No. We won’t win an All-Ireland quarter-final playing like that. We know that.

"There was no excuse for us playing the way we did. That wasn’t a good Wexford performance. We won’t live with Clare playing like that. That’s the truth."
