Kevin Walsh's side trailed by 1-15 to 0-10 after 57 minutes, with Stefan Campbell in inspirational form for Armagh, kicking 1-09.
The sides were level at 0-09 each at half-time but Armagh raised their game after the dismissal of Ethan Rafferty at the start of the second half, scoring 1-06 without reply and Campbell drilling home a 53rd minute penalty.
Galway looked dead and buried but finished strongly with 1-05 on the bounce with Paul Conroy and Cummins pointing plus a free and a '45' from Shane Walsh bringing them back into contention.
There was still a goal in it when Aidan Forker was sent off in the 73rd minute and Galway pumped several high balls into the square looking for the equaliser.
Armagh goalkeeper Paddy Morrison made a superb save from Damien Comer's flick and it looked like the last action of the game – but there was still time for one final twist.
Referee Sean Hurson signalled four minutes of stoppage time but there were several stoppages during that time and as the game entered the seventh minute, Sean Denvir's long ball in was punched home at the back post to grab a draw that felt like a win for Galway.
Stefan Campbell sparkled in the first half with seven points from play for Armagh. It was Campbell who put Armagh 0-03 to 0-01 ahead after nine minutes.

Gavin McParland nailed the first before Campbell scored three points in a breathtaking two minutes.
By this stage Cathal Sweeney was moved onto the on-fire forward but fared no better, Campbell shifting onto his left to score two points off his weaker foot.
From 0-07 to 0-03 down, Galway scored five of the next six points to draw level at 0-08 all through five different scorers.
Damien Comer, Hoare, Liam Silke, Shane Walsh and Paul Conroy were all on target and despite hitting six wides in the opening half, some from easy shooting positions, the Tribesmen were back on level terms and they were still level at 0-09 at the break.
Shane Walsh scored straight from the throw-in to put Galway ahead for the first and only time in the game.
Colm Watters scored a brace with Brendan Donaghy and Miceal McKenna also on target with Galway unable to utilise the spare man.
When Cathal Sweeney pulled down Campbell in the square, the forward confidently dispatched the penalty low into the net and chipped over a free to put Armagh 1-15 to 0-10 ahead after 57 minutes, but Galway finished strongly with an unanswered 1-5 to snatch a thrilling draw that gives their promotion charge real momentum.
